There are certain traits about
- As documented by above mentioned survey it kills morale and productivity
- It often tends to kill creativity as well when employees are not allowed to think outside the box
- It kills the development of individual employees when they are not working in a safe and empowering environment i.e. they don’t know when is the next time the manager takes over their tasks
- It also slows down the overall performance of the team as the manager is spending more time executing/micromanaging than he/she is developing the team and setting direction
- Last but not least seeing a micro manager in action make other employees outside the team question what is going on overall in the company i.e. is the managers manager on top of the situation
Every single one of these reasons should be enough to convince a company to get rid of all of its micromanagers or at least train them to use different management techniques. The thing about management is that as a person you have to value the act of managing i.e. not the act of doing. Every time you micromanage your team you are doing instead of managing. I think it’s time every manager out there asks him or herself that essential question of whether they actually like managing or not. If a manager cannot wholeheartedly answer yes to this question they honestly should not be managing, but might find themselves more suited for a specialist role.
