First of all, the phrase "keep emotions out of it" is idiotic because it is impossible for human's to not be emotional. People are full of emotions and you can't stop them or hide them regardless of how good you are. Lets face it, the business world is full of jerks filled with arrogance, selfishness, or plan out meanness. Any negative reaction to these people is a reflection on ourselves. Its like in a football game when one player takes a cheap shot at another and the one who retaliates is the only one the referee sees. The hardest thing to do is nothing but doing something is costly.
On the other hand, we may unknowingly come across as the jerk ourselves if we are not careful. Being a jerk is more costly to a career than reacting improperly to a jerk. And the problem with being a jerk is that you don't usually know when people think you're a jerk. If you do know and you still are, your problems are too big to be address here or by me. Try to be conscious of how you come across; your confidence level could be playing against you.
