Operating Lease Costs
Posted Fri, 02/03/2012 - 11:54pm by Jin Cha (Manager)
Hi,
We're re-negotiating our office lease and, in the process, incurring legal costs. It's an operating lease. Our CFO wants to capitalize this cost but I can't see how this is possible. There is no future economic benefit. What do you think? Am I missing something here?
Thanks

Your bank may be ripping you off
Posted Wed, 02/01/2012 - 12:57pm by Scott MacDonald (President/Owner)
How does your bank calculate interest expense on your loans? If they use a 365 basis to calculate your daily interest factor, and then calculate the monthly interest based on actual days, then in February they will be getting an extra day's interest from you.

Does anybody have direct experience integrating the Adaptive Planning Connector to QuickBooks? What is the depth of integration (i.e., to the transaction or to a summary by time period-account-class)? What is the performance like when synching?

A quick question: My 29 yr old son lives here in Illinois most of the year working for a local employer, however for the winter months (Nov-Mar) he works in Florida, for another employer. In effect he is out of Illinois for about 4-5 months each year.

Series A valuation for pre revenue company
Posted Fri, 01/27/2012 - 9:02pm by Joan Varrone (CFO)
I wanted to gather some market intelligence on pre money valuations for very early stage companies that are pre revenue. Can anyone provide any anecdotal evidence or point me to any articles which discusses the range of valuations in the market. I know that these valuations are situation specific but I wanted to see if there was any data to look at.

D&O or General Liability coverage for Non-profit / not-for-profit group
Posted Fri, 01/27/2012 - 1:01pm by Keith Perry (Director, Finance)
Colleagues,
In your experience, is it reasonable or necessary (either) to get this type of coverage for a not-for-profit? What types of risk (primarily to board members, latterly to voluteers) should be of real concern, or is that superfluous in this situation?

MBA, CPA or Neither for CFO and Controller Positions
Posted Thu, 01/26/2012 - 2:14pm by Dan Spohn (CFO)
I have my thoughts on this but was curious what the group thought was better training to be CFO and/or controller? MBA, CPA or neither? I recognize they are two different positions requiring different skills so opinions on which is better for both would be great.
I am having a discussion with a collegue about this is the reason I am asking. Thanks in advance.

How to assess Excel and data management skills in a job interview
Posted Wed, 01/25/2012 - 8:26pm by Bob Stenz (Corporate Controller)
Excel and data management (including working with large volumes of data and databases) skills are often assumed upon finance and accounting professionals. However, some positions are better served by those who are exceptionally strong in this area. How does a hiring manager assess (or maybe test) Excel and data management skills in an interview?
