Mozilla Rethinks Approach for Enterprises
Web browser developer Mozilla has decided to reexamine its Firefox release cycle and establish a way that makes it easier for enterprise users to incorporate the software.
Earlier this year, Mozilla introduced a rapid release cycle in which it would publish a new installment of Firefox consisting of relatively minor changes every six weeks. This approach was apparently necessary for Mozilla to stay competitive with Google's web browser Chrome.
However, according to an InformationWeek report, the rapid release cycle also presented challenges for enterprises, because they were unable to test and approve the software before a new version was available. As a result, many experts were concerned that enterprises were not a focus for Mozilla.
To remedy this, Mozilla will reportedly establish an Extended Support Release program for the desktop version of Firefox. According to the news provider, the new approach give Firefox installments 12-week overlaps, so enterprises have more time to test and certify the software.
InformationWeek noted that the the ESR program will not be available for mobile versions of Firefox. However, Mozilla is making headway in the area as well. Last month, Mozilla introduced a new look for Firefox for Android devices, including the up-and-coming tablets.
