About the Economy

Welcome to the Proformative group About the Economy...a place to exchange ideas and opinions about our current and future economic conditions.

As I write this, the economic signals for the US economy are mixed.

On the up side, the Dow is over 10,000 and has been rising for several months. Also, a growing number of economic commentators and government officials insist that the recession finally is ending.

But the down side continues to be a concern:

--In September, 2009, Fortune Magazine's article, Insiders sell like there's no tomorrow, reported that there were $31 of stock sales in August for each $1 of stock purchases.

--In September, the U-6 unemployment rate ended at 16.1%, compared to 7.8% just three years earlier. This is the rate for unemployed people looking for a job, those who have given up, and those working part time because they can't find full-time positions.

--In October, 2009, CFO Magazine reported on a survey of 657 CFOs, which showed that more than half of them expected that employment levels at their companies wouldn't return to their 2007 levels for at least two years. And about 24% thought that employment levels never would return to 2007 levels.

--In October, Reuters reported that Gold hits record high as dollar slips vs euro. Many other sources published similar stories before and since, and likely will do so in the future.

--Looking ahead, taxes certainly will rise, perhaps a lot. And because of crowding-out and other conditions, credit soon could be tight and expensive.

What are your opinions about our economic future? How is your economic outlook affecting your plans for the years ahead? What external data and economic analyses have you found to be most useful for business planning? What specific actions are you taking to adjust to the new conditions?

What government actions could improve the economy? What should business do, if anything, to encourage those actions?

I hope you'll share your thoughts About the Economy. Perhaps we'll all learn something useful. At a minimum, you'll get a chance to vent.
