Have experience using Quickbook Premier Manufacture?

| May 1, 2009Does anyone have experience using QuickBooks Premier Manufacture? If so, what feedback do you have? Do you have other manufacturing software recommendations? I am assisting a start up client with choosing a manufacturing software package and they are leaning towards QB.

I have used QB a number of times with outsourced manufacturers, but never with in-house mfg. We would track inventory via our CM's ERP and when it came off their books it would drop ship into the channel but we would always have some parts which we could track in excel and JE into the system.
Question: is the product manufactured in house? That is, will you be managing the BOM, build planning (MRP) and manufacturing (inventory in through backflush) on this software?

I have not used it (I have used QB Pro many times) but I thought I'd take a look at public reviews. Beyond the few on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/QuickBooks-Premier-Manufacturing-Wholesale-VERSION/dp/B000HBXJT6)which are two years old I found nothing. Of course you can see what QB says themselves right here (http://quickbooks.intuit.com/product/accounting-software/small-business-management-software.jsp). It's even buried on their site.

My experience with QB Premier - Construction (the different editions are not that different, they just start you off with a different chart of accounts) is that QB is a great value for the money.
Where you are likely to run into limitations is when you have multiple warehoueses. You can track different sales channels or territories through the class codes but as soon as you have more than one inventory location it can be time to upgrade to a different product. I've read ad hoc about some inventory modules that are compatible with QB but have not used any of them. Supposedly they can solve this problem.

My experiences have always dealt with larger implementations requiring audited financials. We have always used GAAP compliant accounting systems, such as MAS90/200 or Great Plains. You don't provide too many details on your client so it's hard to recommend "blind". I'd want to know their size: either in revenue or employees or complexity of manufacturing. I'd want to know if this is a discreet or process/continuous manufacturing. Client's experience and IT sophistication, etc. etc. etc.
In my company we looked a bunch of systems, both on-premise and in the cloud and after an extensive comparison chose to go with NetSuite's SaaS offering. Now we may not be exactly like yours situation but with 45 employees producing electronic components and needing demand planning and MRP and inventory controls, we have been happy with our choice.
