How IPA can thrive in an era of disruptive change

David Nordella's Profile

It is no secret that change is accelerating for the Healhcare industry.  Independent Practice Associations (IPA) have been dramatically affected by what seems to be a torrent of changing medical standards, business benchmarks and regulations.  Yet many businesses thrive in a recession as they uncover community needs that have not been successfully addressed previously.  The challenge is to build a sustainable financial roadmap to the successes that your competition has overlooked.

Consider Helicopteros Sanitorios, S.A., a home doctor and emergency serviced located in the Costa del Sur area in Spain.  More than 38% of critical patients and accident victims in the region died before the company was founded due to poor transportation infrastructure.  The Andulusian area remains remote but now only 1 in 1,000 dies in transit, according to the company, as they can be evacuated to the correct hospital by helicopter.  Helicopter Santarios turned a local problem into an advantage by enhancing the quality of life for their bilingual community (Spanish and English).

Have your physicians speak with patients and businesses in your area.  Encourage them to listen to anything desired that your practice could possibly provide.  Many of these ideas may seem look "blue sky daydreams" but are worth your analyis of the capital required, pertinent financial structure and captal resources available.

The Finance Director of an IPA that beomes a "How to" person will be viewed as an increasingly valuable team member.   A reputation in sustaining innovation can have a positive impact on your career.  After all, your receptivity to innovation may sustain your business while others fail around you.

I will be interested in hearing your stories about using your financial skills as a platform for innovation.
