The Greek financial crisis deepened recently, but not as the result of any economic development. Rather, the country's new financial minister was forced to resign after being rushed to the hospital for health reasons, according to The Associated Press.

The Hygeia Hospital where Vassilis Rapanos received his emergency care would not disclose the nature of the medical condition, the AP reported, but it did say the ex-finance minister would be released shortly. In his letter of resignation, which was issued before he had a chance to be officially sworn into office, Rapanos said that it was clear he had not overcome his health condition. Recently appointed Prime Minister Antonis Samaras accepted the letter shortly after he himself was discharged from a hospital following emergency eye surgery to repair a detached retina, according to the AP.

The health concerns of two of the nation's top officials postponed further European Union meetings to resolve the Greek debt crisis. Debt inspectors have delayed a trip to the country, and Germany, which is the strongest of the EU economic powers, has said a summit scheduled for later this week will likely also be delayed, the AP reported.
