The chief financial officer of Nokia Corporation said during a recent interview with Dow Jones Newswires that the company is not actually being squeezed by telecom operators in relation to the retail price of its new Lumia smartphones.

MarketWatch reports CFO Timo Ihamuotila told Dow Jones that Nokia sets the prices for its mobile handsets and that the company has "excellent" relationships with its operators.

Ihamuotila's comments come after news that Wal-Mart plans to offer the new Lumia 710 smartphone for free in the U.S. as part of an agreement with Deutsche Telekom AG's T-Mobile, according to the news source.

"Pricing is done in partnership with the operators. We, of course, try to find the right price point for each product which has a consumer appeal," Ihamuotila noted.

He added that a major portion of Nokia's current focus is to educate retail sales staff to correctly market the smartphone to potential consumers.

The finance chief's comments come as Nokia recently sold its media advertising business to a startup company in the U.S. called Matchbin, Reuters reported.
