Considering the convergence of the United States and international accounting standards, the increase of corporations doing business overseas and heightened regulations making correct financial reporting a top priority, it would not be surprising that accounts are in greater demand.

Indeed, a recent report found that the global view that many professional accounting bodies are adopting is also contributing to a rise in the population of professional accountants. According to The Accountant's World Survey 2012: Going Global, the Asia-Pacific has seen the number of professionals jump 34 percent to hit 543,064. In Latin America, their total has grown to 312,460 (a 7 percent increase) and rose 16 percent to hit 222,785 in South Asia.

The researchers also noticed that national professional bodies are starting to consolidate in order to achieve more consistent qualifications and a greater reach.

"Globalization of the accounting profession brings significant benefits, professional bodies that partner with local organizations support them in education and training programs, and these partnerships improve the number and quality of professionals supporting global financial markets," said Nicola Maher, editor of The Accountant.

She added that established organizations in particular will be able to improve the level and scope of their service to the members who are working abroad.
