Programming, App Development Top 2012 IT Skills, Study Finds

Programming and application developers are in high demand among U.S. enterpris

A new study from technology news provider Computerworld revealed that, despite a sluggish economy, IT executives are looking to hire, and programming and application developers are the most-sought-after professionals.

The study, which surveyed more than 350 IT executives, found that nearly 29 percent plan to increase their IT staffing during the next 12 months. Only 17 percent plan to decrease staff, while 54 percent say they will remain the same.

Programming and application development took the top spot in terms of skills sought, as 61 percent of executives said they plan to hire for this skill by next summer. This hiring trend is reflective of the rise of mobile and web technology in the enterprise.

Project management and help desk/technical support occupied the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively. Other top IT skills included business intelligence, data center and security, among others.

One surprising trend missing from Computerworld's report is cloud computing. Many predict cloud computing will be a mainstay in enterprise technology for years to come and has the potential to alter the IT department drastically. Going forward, experts say, it is likely more enterprises will seek IT professionals with experience in the cloud.
