A new survey released by public relations firm Edelman found that less than half of the public has faith in banks and financial services to do the right thing, meaning they are the least trusted industries.

Bloomberg reports the survey showed 47 percent of the public trusts bank, which is down from 50 percent one year ago, while only 45 percent trust financial services companies, a decline from 48 percent.

The survey, which elicited responses from individuals in 20 countries between October 10 and November 30, found that technology corporations were the most trusted at 79 percent, down just slightly from the previous level of 80 percent.

In terms of overall confidence in the business sector, trust among the global public dropped from 56 percent to 53 percent in the most recent survey, according to statistics published by the UK newspaper The Guardian.

Bloomberg notes the survey was conducted in 20 minute online interviews with college graduates whose household is in the top quartile for their age group and who follow public policy news issues on a regular basis.
