Technology figures to play a key role in the success of companies in 2012, as more organizations turn to new innovations and deployments to maximize budgets and promote a more productive workforce. As a result, IT services firm Unisys recently released a report highlighting the top tech trends for the coming year.

Unsurprisingly, cloud computing topped the company's list. Unisys predicted that companies will increase their commitments to both private cloud computing models as well as Software-as-a-Service due in large part to the benefits of both becoming more evident.

Other technologies that made the list include cybersecurity and mobile, social and smart computing.

"Enterprises are now realizing they cannot afford to keep these technologies at the periphery of their organizations," Unisys chief technology officer Fred Dillman said. "To compete effectively, they must integrate these technologies into the core of their customer-facing systems and applications."

A SYS-CON Media report released last month also touched on the priority companies will give the cloud in 2012. According to the news provider, more retailers will turn to the technology to create storefronts in the cloud.
