Salesforce CEO: Evolution Key to Leadership

The ability to evolve is key to leadership, Marc Benioff asserts.

With the recent exit of Steve Jobs as CEO of Apple, many from the technology industry and others are discussing the lessons they learned from Jobs and his leadership. One executive that has chimed in on this discussion is CEO Marc Benioff, who, at the recent Dreamforce 2011 conference, highlighted what it means to be a leader in the 21st century.

According to a recent Forbes report, Benioff asserted that the ability and willingness to evolve is one of the key attributes of a successful leader. This was perhaps one of Jobs' strongest attributes. As Apple's CEO, he introduced a new era of mobility with the launch of the iPhone and the iPad. has had success in this area as well. Though the company is not as instantly recognizable as Apple, Salesforce has been instrumental in introducing the business world to the cloud, a technology that many see as having a significant impact on enterprise IT for the foreseeable future.

But, as Forbes noted, Benioff didn't stop with the cloud. After the technology caught on, he shifted Salesforce's focus to social media in an attempt to readdress the social enterprise.

The strategy seems to be working for Benioff and Salesforce. According to the company's most recent quarterly report, revenues increased 38 percent year-over-year, reaching $546 billion.
