Soft skills critical in path from controller to CFO

While corporate controllers may be the ideal candidates for CFO jobs based on qualifications and current responsibilities, the fact is many people serving as controllers can be overlooked when it comes time to name a new financial boss.

As such, it is important for controllers looking to take the leap to CFO to master a specific set of abilities, known as "soft skills," in order to show that they are truly qualified for the new position.

Although results-oriented corporate controllers may seem to have the appropriate skills for CFO, the soft skills such as motivational abilities, conflict management and approachability need to be honed considerably, according to CFO.com.

Even with these skills, another crucial step that corporate controllers should consider taking is trying their hands at different financial roles within the company, in order to "get in front of the issues," Coachmen Industries Inc. CFO Colleen Zuhl told the news source.

By doing this and understanding that qualifications such as a MBA or CPA are becoming requirements in all actuality, corporate controllers should put themselves in position as a strong candidate for their company's CFO job.
