Consider it a Holiday Miracle. The Wall Street Journal reports that the Standard and Poor's 500-stock index gained 4 points to finally land in positive territory on Friday.

However, the newspaper notes that the good news (coming at the end of a year that has been "frustrating" for fund managers, to say the least) also carries a little trepidation, since what indicates the broader market's strong performance can exacerbate the struggles of individual portfolios.

"I've had some horrific nightmares as an asset manager in the last two weeks of the year," James Paulsen, chief investment strategist at Wells Capital Management, told the Journal, adding that this year carried signs of a similar situation. "If your portfolio is in the red and the broader market is in the green … it'll stick out like a sore thumb."

Last week's success for the S&P and the Dow Industrials - which gained 124.25 points on Friday, the WSJ noted - is a common occurrence at the end of the year, according to Fox Business. The Dow rallies in the final five days before New Year's, "approximately 80 percent of the time," Fox said.
