New technologies are expanding the enterprise software industry, as up-to-date business applications remain critical to success in today's ultra-competitive business landscape, according to a recent Global Industry Analysts report.

Cloud computing and mobile devices are changing the way companies develop and distribute essential business programs and are the main reasons GIA researchers expect the global enterprise software market to reach $384.8 billion by 2015.

"Cloud technology is an emerging paradigm computing concept that enables both information technology infrastructure and software to be delivered directly over the internet as a service," the report said. "This type of an arrangement whereby companies can expand network capacity, and run applications directly on a vendor’s network, offers a host of advantages with the most primary being radically lower IT costs."

The report said more companies will use the Software-as-a-Service model to deploy business applications in the cloud, enabling them to improve scalability and allow employees to access programs remotely.

Many experts say SaaS is among the top IT trends affecting enterprises this year. According to a separate Global Industry Analysts study, the SaaS market will expand to reach $26.5 billion by 2015.
