Top 4 Career Management Tips

The economic downturn forced many individuals to take jobs that may not have been their dream scenarios, but there are a number of ways to reboot an employment situation even if you don't switch jobs.

In a recent U.S. News & World Report column, career and workplace expert Jacqui Barrett-Poindexter notes that adopting a new perspective can be key to improving your work-life balance and make the job seem less frustrating.

Barrett-Poindexter points out that either stress or boredom can contribute to a helpless feeling at work, and the following strategies can help you get back on track.

1. Believe in, and seek out, new opportunities. Even if you do not want to switch careers or even find a new job in your industry, it can be helpful to look within your company for advancement opportunities. Rather than stifling possibilities, you should actively look for them and determine which new venture can help you accomplish your career goals.

2. Understand that failure is inevitable and accept it. If you're looking to get out of a rut at work, making a drastic change can either be a failure of a move, or it can boost your productivity, improve work-life balance and even aid the company's bottom line, according to Barrett-Poindexter.

3. Give yourself time to recharge. Though work can seemingly consume your entire life, you need to make sure this doesn't happen. Learn to simply turn off the switch when you leave the office, giving you time to recharge your batteries. Having a life outside of the office can make the day less taxing and give you something to look forward to.

4. Believe in your abilities. The easiest thing for professionals struggling from boredom or frustration in the office can be listening to others who share those sentiments. However, rather than simply listening to negativity, tell yourself that you can do anything you put your mind to. Getting ahead at work is possible if you put your mind to it, rather than lamenting your current situation.

For financial professionals specifically, these strategies are crucial. Taking your work home may seem necessary at times, but limiting this is key. Additionally, though it seems like you may be stuck in place, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the U.S. economy added 15,000 finance jobs in March.
