While the answers to questions like these are different depending upon the employer, human resources experts such as recruiters, hiring managers and career coaches assert that a few basic rules of thumb apply to the majority of people starting new positions, according to FINS.

Day One
A person who is at their first day on a new job should demonstrate three key qualities - interest, preparedness and enthusiasm, the media outlet reports. Things may not go perfectly smoothly on an individual's first day. They can run into a wide range of obstacles including not having an email account set up and not having a computer ready. A person who encounters challenges like these should not show his frustration, and should focus on learning about his or her new coworkers and company.

Learn about the workplace
"Get to know the lay of the land," Lisa Quast, president of Seattle-based career development consultancy Career Woman, told the news source. "Go exploring with someone from the department and have them walk you around the entire building or campus to train you on where departments are located, the restrooms, cafeteria, human resources, finance, legal, operations, sales, marketing, et cetera."

Finish paperwork
The best way for a person to ensure that he gets all the needed paperwork filled out on his first day is to show up prepared. The individual will probably need to fill out various forms, including a W-4 and an I-9. A person can make this process easier by bringing several forms of identification and a voided check if he wants to make use of direct deposit, according to the media outlet.

Meet regular coworkers
A person doesn't need to learn everything about his new coworkers, but finding out who he will work with regularly will display enthusiasm. Even if he is not starting with several other people, he will probably meet a wide range of people on his first day.

Meet with your manager
If both the new employee and his boss can fit it in with your schedules, it is wise for him to sit down with his new boss for at least 30 minutes during the first day. If the new worker can arrange this meeting, he or she should prepare questions.
