What We Do
xTuple applications are fully integrated, end-to-end Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) business management software packages for manufacturers, distributors and other companies who want to:
- increased control over operations
- greater visibility into the supply chain
- opportunities to grow sales, profits and productivity
There are several versions of xTuple’s open source software: the free PostBooks Edition and the commercially licensed Standard, Manufacturing and Enterprise Editions. All products contain sophisticated product definition, inventory control, purchasing, manufacturing, distribution, CRM, sales, as well as a fully integrated general ledger. All products support multi-currency and feature fully integrated custom reporting (both ad hoc operational reports and financial reporting). The following pages detail this functionality, plus additional features included in xTuple’s Standard, Manufacturing and Enterprise Editions.
xTuple’s applications are a two-tier system: a graphical client built with the open source Qt framework and a server running the open source PostgreSQL database.
The technical requirements are very simple – the graphical client software runs on Windows, Mac OS X or Linux computers with entry-level memory and disk space. There is also a wireless client which runs on a handheld barcode scanner.
The server software, powered by the open source PostgreSQL database, can also run on Windows, Mac, Linux or mobile. It can run locally, on your office network – or hosted in a data center in the cloud by one of our Partners. All business logic resides in the database, so there is no middle tier (e.g., Java / application server), and the client is quite “thin” and simple. You do not need a virtual machine or other resource-intensive add-ons.
Because Qt enables a truly cross-platform solution (Windows, Linux and Mac), nothing special must be done to your operating system. No complicated installer, registry settings or anything else will interfere with other applications on your computer. Simply run the xTuple binary out of the one directory where it resides, and you are ready to run your business.
The same xTuple binary can connect to a database for any of our products. Upgrading from PostBooks to any other xTuple Edition is as simple as running a two-minute script on your database. It also underscores our commitment to maintaining a single code base, where our commercial enterprise customers – and the larger community of open source users – can share and work together in one online hub for all three products.
There are several layers of security available with xTuple. From a technical perspective, you may utilize a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) connection, and you may also enable an enhanced authentication mechanism that scrambles your users’ passwords. You may also assign individual privileges within the system in as much detail as desired.
We continue making the software more modular so you can use discrete pieces of the system separately, without having to implement an entire ERP system. The modules described include:
- Accounts Payable
- Accounts Receivable
- General Ledger
