Business Execution software is different from Business Intelligence software. Business Execution software helps organizations establish and communicate organizational objectives and goals. Communication happens through the entire organization creating alignment of goals at the division, business unit, department, and individual employee levels with those of the overall organization.

Business Execution software then enables the organization to measure at each level how well they are performing to those goals. Typical functionality includes goal management, employee performance management, compensation management, succession planning, and analytics. The primary solution providers of Business Execution software are SuccessFactors, Taleo, and Halogen.

Business Intelligence software is the tools and systems that allow a company to gather, store, access and analyze corporate data to aid in decision-making. Generally these systems provide critical insight into the areas of customer profiling, customer support, market research, market segmentation, product profitability, financial and statistical analysis, and inventory and distribution analysis.

Business Intelligence solutions come in the form of packaged applications and reporting tools. Packaged application providers include Cognos (IBM), Hyperion (Oracle), Business Objects (SAP), Applied Analytics, and a myriad of other providers. Business Intelligence tools include Microsoft SQL Server and its integrated suite of reporting and analysis services, Excel, and a host of other data warehousing, OLAP, and modeling tools.

All of the business execution solutions mentioned above are SaaS (cloud) solutions. Of the business intelligence solutions mentioned about I believe that all, except Applied Analytics, are available as a SaaS or hosted solution.
