It depends on the size of the organization. Google the word and you will see
various job descriptions. Usually rolls up to CFO and reports to this person.

A Controller job description varies with the size of the org. Someone posted a good breakdown of the controller role as it varies from the CFO role here a bit ago; it might have the level of detail that you want. I'll try to locate.

The size of the organization is important but also where they are in the their formation of the company. A fully established company, in a mature stage of their life, may have room for both a Controller and CFO. But, in a newly formed company, the CFO will be spending about half their time in Controller like activities related to Accounting system establishment; and half their time in CFO like activities related to investor interaction.

The Controller is essentially the Chief Accounting Officer reporting to the CFO (assuming there is a CFO).

Thus their job is to make sure the accounting and financial reports are accurate and timely.

In smaller companies the Controller assumes some of the responsibilities held by a CFO when there is none.
