John,

I doubt that any company in any industry could get a definitive list from others about the Excel reports that would be needed to run that company. Every company is unique, with unique markets, challenges, and employees. Their list shouldn't be your list.

Also, I would not plan for Excel to be your General Ledger system. Instead, I would look to QuickBooks, or to some other moderately priced accounting system for your industry. Let that system do the grunt work of collecting and organizing your accounting data, and producing your financials, not Excel.

Instead, let Excel use that accounting and other data to give you better insight about your company's problems and opportunities.

That said, it probably would be useful if people could suggest key reports and analyses that help them to manage their companies more profitably. With luck, you would be able to apply several of those suggestions right away.

I agree with Charlie about the suitability of QuickBooks for a real estate agency.

One of my real estate clients' greatest concern was to track the reimbursements for his agents. I taught him a specialized way to use QuickBooks to automatically track those, so they don't pay agents too much, too little, too soon, or too late.

Profitability by agent is also a great report for management to use.
