Also, what are the benefits that the cloud has over non-cloud software and how soon will those benefits evaporate as the small business grows.... In other words, look at the short and mid-term effects of your decision.

This may sound silly, but it's not really: If cloud is the answer, what is your real question? :)

Cloud computing is a method of delivery for computer software for you to use. It is not a functional feature; it does not guarantee that cloud software has better functionality than on premise software.

So, what are your functional needs-what business processes do you want to record in a software package? Is it Sales Force Automation/Marketing and Campaign Management, is it Customer Order/Billing, is FInance and Accounting?

If you can define your high level needs, you can then start a software selection and evaluation project involving a review of qualified vendors (cloud or on premise) that best meet your needs.
