How to ask for a raise at my existing job? (Webinar Attendee Question)

Any tactics for negotiating increased comp at an existing position?

There are only two approaches that work -
-show you are below the salary level for like positions in a similar company; or,
-show the value you have brought to the company to justify additional compensation.
The type of response you will receive will tell you about your future with the company.

I have heard of people securing an offer and then showing it to their manager with the implied threat, "increase my salary or I will leave." This approach may work but it may also create distrust.
