What KPIs should nonpofits care about?

nonprofit kpisAre you on the board for a nonprofit, or have you been? If so, what KPIs are or were you most interested in knowing? Are there any leading or lagging measures that are most important to nonprofits?

Nonprofit is a tax status, which has nothing to do with the size or business activity of the organization. The KPI's you would use would be business specific, but common to any organization - Operations, Financial, Customer Satisfaction, and Compliance. The KPI's you may not care about deal with competitor bench marking and market share, but again that is company specific.

Hope that helps.

You may want to look at www.charitynavigator.org. They have a listing of financial benchmarks they use to evaluate nonprofits.

I was unable to locate the financial benchmarks on this website. Do you have more information as to exactly where this information is found on this site? Thank you!

J Jeffrey - What I plan to use for a presentation I am preparing for are found at http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=content.view&cpid=48#.VMuQoGjF-4I

I think the benchmarks are listed in the scoring of the charity. For instance, under Admin expenses, a non-profit is ranked a 10 if its admin expenses is from 0-10% of expenses are part of the function. Whereas a non-profit will be ranked significantly lower if its Admin expenses 20% or more of the total function.

From what I've read the benchmarks are interpretive based on the financial ratings tables. So you will want to read that page and then interpret it like that.
