Has anyone had experience outsourcing manufacturing to Mexico under a Maquila program?  If so, what was your experience and do you have any recommendations, concerns, etc.?

Hi Rick, I have had significant experience with outsourcing manufacturing to Mexico and other low cost countries. It depends upon the manufacturing expertises you require. Many facilities exist in Tijuana and in Juarez. You would probably want to start with a contractor but, after you are comfortable, you can do it on your own. I can recommend some contacts for this if you need them. Bob Farkas

I agree with Bob, let someone else run it for you first, then go direct. You can also ping me directly if you want some contacts. I have worked with some very, very experienced VPs of Mfg who could give you the full scoop.

Hello Rick, I have been involved in the maquila industry for 20+ years primarily as controller in the South Texas region. The decision whether to go direct or with a shelter program is not a easy one to make. I can provide you with details on what to look for. Drop me a note if you would like to talk about it.

Efren - thank you for your reply. We are a small uniform manufacturer in San Diego and are considering utilizing MX(Tijuana) as a manufacturer. Call me if you have time and I welcome your thoughts on what to look out for in the maquila processing. Rick 415-684-8981.
