SharePoint Best Practices for Finance & Accounting

Greetings! How is your organization using SharePoint to improve finance and accounting processes and reporting? For example, do you use it for team calendars, dashboards, reports, etc? If yes, do you have any best practices you can share? Thanks!

At a previous company it was used in the Professional Services organization to set up a workflow approval system for the many Statements of Work coming through. Defined fields were filled in (start/end dates, rates etc), and they were tracked through stages. In one stage PS Ops, Legal and Finance had to approve before it went on to the next stage. Also used to track expiring SOWs.

We use SharePoint with a consultant, but otherwise have found it to be not user friendly. At this time we have elected not to use if for our accounting documents that need shared. We are looking into using our company's intranet site, but that had disadvantages as well. I would love to hear about other options people are using.

Sharepoint can be used in tracking deliverables (e.g. tax filing, FS report submission, interco billings), where the info will be coming from numerous accountants in different regions. Just make sure to use a standard naming convention for folders and files uploaded, for easy tracking. For revision or deletion of uploaded reports, it is best to give that access to limited users--to those who will summarize the uploaded reports. To enforce regular updates in Sharepoint, include in performance appraisal of managers/supervisors the timeliness of submission.
