It's about understanding the CEO's vision and aspirations for the company. The first discussion should be all about them. To gain trust you must be willing to listen. To demonstrate value, you must show that you understand. You can do this by filling in blanks or talking about the implications of various initiatives. You can take away what you've learned and think about how you can give more insight on the issues that concern the CEO. Perhaps its a reporting issue, a credibility issue, an analysis issue, a forecasting issue, a control issue, a strategic issue - what is it that is keeping your CEO up at night?
