Is there a revenue recognition software that is ideal for SMB's?

Possibly a better way to state the question would be “is there a Revenue Recognition Solution that will scale with my business – supporting the pricing and performance I need now and as I grow.”

The challenge for people in technology companies – assuming that is driving your need – is the required level of capabilities and expectations is often geared to the mid-market or enterprise even if the current budget or transaction volume is geared to the SMB market. Additionally, one of the main reasons to consider a revenue management solution is the challenges that result from growth – what is easy to manage in a spreadsheet one day becomes unstable and unscalable the next.

Our company has been offering revenue recognition applications for nearly five years spanning early ramp into large midsized organizations ($500M+). To your point – Yes, solutions are readily available which may be ideal for SMB’s.

What are your specific needs? Are you looking for an amortization tool to recognize revenue over the life of a project or are you looking for something that recognizes revenue for projects?

We use Acumatica for our support and maintenance contracts. It supports bundled products and pushes down revenue to help support VSOE requirements. They have a SaaS model or it can be deployed on premise.

I find SMBs have the same revenue recognition issues as larger companies so I don't know there is a tool geared for SMBs. In fact, SMBs perhaps have more complex issues particularly in earlier stages as their business models evolve necessitating the corresponding evolution in policy. That said, best thing is always to draft a detailed requirements document and get in touch with the handful of vendors that do billings and revenue management for a living. Cloud and SaaS based offerings will tend to be more desirable if a budget for capital IT projects is not yet there for the G&A function.
