You have the right starting point for your search. You want to start with the needs specific to your industry and to your system priorities. Excellent!

The retail industry is a big enough ERP / Business Software market that there are sub-categories of functionality available – so you may want to go a bit deeper in your industry description if there are specific additional requirements for your exact business.

Retail business systems needs usually include financial management, distribution management (purchasing, sales, inventory), and POS (point of sale) solutions. The POS solution is what used to be your ‘cash register,’ but is now more commonly computer terminal(s) that link to your distribution and financial management software. POS solutions can also include eCommerce software support if you sell online. To effectively manage inventory and retail finance you will need integrated POS support.

Beyond the basic modules you should factor in volume (how many POS terminals, how much inventory) and go-to-market (physical locations and/or eCommerce) to determine the scope of what you need. Bar-code reading support is mandatory at certain volume levels for efficient processing. You’ll also need to think about your IT infrastructure and support to see what would best fit. Answering these questions will add a bit more color to your query – and will help you more quickly find the best solution candidates.

For finding the specific solution pick out the key words from your expanded information set above and do an internet search. The internet search should help find your candidates – and also broader market information about your candidates. You should also approach one or two others in your specific industry to ask them about what they use and what they like.
