As far down the organization as you can possibly stand. I understand the need of some startups to stay under the radar, and confidentiality in a startup can be critical, so this may be a decision based on priorities. But there’s a fundamental tension here. One of the most important purposes of management reporting is to get everyone on the same page; how can people get on the same page if you haven’t given them the book? And it’s hard to hold people responsible for achieving results when they don’t have to information to know how they’re doing.
